Reduce Garbage & Recycling Truck Pick-Up Stops
Encourage and allow co-operative neighbours to combine their garbage
& recycling items for one pick-up stop between 2 - 3 households.
This seems a reasonable thing to do as residential lots are normally
only 20 to 60 feet in width and placing items at the adjoining lot
line or across the street adds only a few steps for residents. I've
noticed pick-ups spaced just far enough apart that drivers need
to stop and start in short 15-20 foot hops then return up the street
in the opposite direction to make pick-ups that were perhaps 20
feet away from those on the other side of the street. This is particularly
true for narrow streets and dense housing. Thus, if some households
combined with at least one neighbour, even just some of the time,
the number of stops and starts would be substantially reduced.
- less fuel, CO2 and noise
- quicker routes and less in-and-out of the cab for drivers
- less wear on vehicles
Implementation: Hamilton's '1-2 bag limit' policy would need to
be addressed as I've had bags left with an orange refusal sticker
when our adjacent 3 households have combined our items (as we usually
do, usually with only 2 bags of garbage between us).
